Google Professional Portfolio Site

https://sites.google.com/site/coachjosephsmith/

Here is the link to my first google site.  It is a work in progress.  It will be very useful in the future.  I appreciate the youtube tutorials that help set it up.

LinkedIn and Plaxo

I like using LinkedIn and Plaxo. It is very useful especially if you have to communicate with a large group, like this class (Kin 710). I like that I can add all my information and contacts in one site. All my contacts just showed up from different sites and then I clicked upload.  Also, I liked that Plaxo connected all of my contacts on facebook.  Both of these sites make social networking much more efficient.

Technorati

I found this site to have information on every subject, except kinesiology.  Fitness had information and coaching had information so it is a useful site.  It is amazing to me that there are so many different sites to find information on any subject of interest.  I was hoping to find some useful information on kinesiology.  Lucky for me there are many other options.

Library Thing

Just checked out Library Thing.  It was interesting to see all the books that are available.  I found books on many different topics that interest me.  I can see this site be very useful in the future.  I found a new book from Coach K from Duke University and other books about coaching that interest me.  Attached is the link to my site on Library Thing.  On my site are other books that I found.

Youtube

As a teacher, I have used youtube many times.  It is amazing what you can find.  It has old films, student projects, old radio shows, speeches from past Presidents, and clips from all over the world.  It is extremely useful in my job as a Social Studies Teacher.  I look forward to seeing how to use it for my own instructional purposes.

Del.iciou.us

The delicious website is something that I will use in the future.  The advantages of it are that you can work with it from anywhere on any computer.  The ability to access your favorite sites or find new ones and save them is very convenient.  Another positive aspect is the possibility of accessing other people's bookmarks that are interesting.  As an educator, the must read bookmark options will give students access to the information they need.  Overall, this is a very useful site. Check it out!

Web 2.0

In reading about Web 2.0, I have come to the realization that the internet can be the most efficient mode of communication  in the world.  News and information is at our fingertips through various forms of social networking.  Interaction from blogging, twitter, facebook and RSS feeds is accessible twenty-four hours a day.  The internet is full of appliances that connect people with information.  Additionally, the internet is becoming  an environment that reaches our wishes more automatically.   It is amazing that data from various sources can be linked so easily and that services are available always and everywhere.
As a teacher and basketball coach, I will try to utilize the new technology to make communication more efficient and consistent with my students and players.  It is just a matter of learning more about so I can use it more efficiently.  I am new to all of this, so it has been quite the process for me it setting up the various accounts and downloading all of the programs.  As I gain more experience and learn more, I will be able to utilize the internet appliances to help me in my career and my master's program in kinesiology.

Coach's Take on Andragogy

I have become a proponent of andragogy.  Learning must be self-directed,  As a teacher, I must try to encourage
and nurture this approach.   In reading NEOMILLENNIAL USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN STRATEGIES: UTILIZING SOCIAL NETWORKING MEDIA TO SUPPORT “ALWAYS ON” LEARNING STYLES by DEREK E. BAIRD M.A. Yahoo, U.S.A., San Francisco, California and MERCEDES FISHER, PH.D. National College of Ireland, Dublin, I have learned that maxixmum cognitive development is based on the full social interaction of the student. Moreover, instruction is most effective when students engage in activities within a supportive learning environment and when they receive appropriate guidance that is mediated by tools.  As a result, students will increase their  range of skill.  Today, web-based and other technologies have given students and teachers the opportunity to achieve many of the benefits of social interactions in web-based learning environments.  As a student, I am new to the web based learning environment and I am beginning to see that with appropriate guidance, I will learn how to use web-based tools to become a more effective educator.
